Adult Ministries
college group
School bells are soon to ring. That transition brings the return of Calvary vacationers and the resumption of Wed night activities and Life Groups and Fall Sunday School classes. It also means that Calvary hosts any number of Baylor, Mclennan County and Texas State Technical students for Worship. We will get visits from new faculty, looking for a church home. We will get visits from graduate students seeking community as they intensify their scholarly efforts. We will get new undergraduates entering our doors to see what Calvary is about and how our church might impact their lives here in Waco.
Calvary has a wonderful history of college ministry. Under former Pastor Ken Massey, hundreds of students found a home at Calvary. We have many adult couples who first came to this congregation as inquiring students, found a place for themselves, and today serve as leaders in all areas of church life.
Calvary is not a “happy, clappy” congregation. Students seeking a rock concert or stream-of-conscious worship service will not have those desires met at Calvary. Students that want programs of all sorts at all times for all things will look elsewhere. That’s just not who we are as a congregation. We aren’t going to pretend to be something we are not. That’s ok for us and it’s ok for those students wanting something different. There are lots of churches in Waco.
Rather, Calvary is a church that will plug students into ministry. We are the church for those who want to participate instead of spectate. Calvary is a church that believes in relationships. We are a church for those who want to know and be known. Calvary is a church that believes the Kingdom is here, now. We are a church that believes and worships and does in the name of Jesus and we welcome others to join us. This is who we are as a congregation. And this is what we plan to communicate to students as they visit churches. We will do this in some intentional and relational ways.
May God bless us, our teachers and students and our community of faith.
